Mâcon

Mâcon is the most southern city in Burgundy, and boasts a cheerful atmosphere due to the colourful riverbanks of the Saône, its large square, its animated terraces, and its intimate historical centre.

Mâcon has lots to offer in terms of cultural past times and sporting activities. And thanks to its renovation projects Mâcon remains a city that never stops growing.

Mâcon is vibrant, cultural and has a rich heritage, and combines all the advantages that a city has to offer with an exceptional environment.

Mâcon is the only city in the Saône et Loire, to have been awarded the infamous 4 flower rating for the beauty of its gardens and floral arrangements throughout. The 4km footpath along the riverbank is a good example of this.

Mâcon is surrounded by the world famous Mâconnais-Beaujolais vineyards providing you with a selection of excellent wines, like the Pouilly-Fuissé, that you can enjoy with your meal or even as an aperitif.

Over 500km the "Route des Vins" spreads across 65 communes and 17 vineyards of the Mâconnais-Beaujolais region. The route guides you through the many places of interest like the famous lands of the poet Lamartine, the wide selection of chateaux and roman monuments, the many wine cellars (caves), where many a "degustation de vin" can take place, and the "Roche de Solutré" where once you reach the top by foot, you have a magnificent view over the whole of the Saône et Loire, and on a sunny day you can even make out the Alps, making the Mâconnais region a definite place to visit in Southern Burgundy.
