Saône et Loire

The most populated department of Burgundy is the Saône et Loire, and it is easy to see why, as it is the most southern department of Burgundy fondly known as Bourgogne du Sud, making it the closest to Lyon and the mountains beyond, and just being that little bit further south means it benefits from a sunny climate, with eating out temperatures starting as early as April and lasting until at least mid-October, with the summer months easily reaching over 28°C.

The beautiful and varied countryside of the Saône et Loire is one of its most important features in attracting tourists each year, that along with its reputable gastronomical offerings.

The Mâconnais/Clunisois region is where the North becomes the South with its rounded roof tiles marking it as a southern area. This region along with the other most southern region of the Saône et Loire – Charollais/Brionnais offer many small villages where you can feel like you are in the heart of the countryside, but in actual fact only be a short drive to a good sized village or town, making you feel secure in the knowledge that civilization is at hand if needed.
